Dry Summer Hair Care

5 ways to keep your hair feeling fresh this summer

Don’t you just love the summertime? For me it usually means traveling to fun destinations, finding water to swim and cool down in, and soaking up as much sunshine outside as possible. But all these amazing activities can be really harsh on color treated hair. Here are 5 tips on how to protect your beautiful hair this summer.

#1: Get your hair wet before you go swimming.

Chlorine is no joke when it comes to drying out your hair and making it change colors. If you plan on getting in a pool this summer, get your hair wet first with clean water (from a shower in the locker room). When you are done taking a dip, rinse your hair! Do not let the chlorine chemicals dry in your hair.

#2: Use a leave-in conditioner

If you want to take it one more step, apply a leave in conditioner before you swim. If your hair is absorbed with yummy product it will soak up less of the harsh chemicals used to keep the pool water clean. My favorite is leave-in conditioner is called On a Cloud, by r+co. This also has a built in UV protectant. This means your hair color is protected from fading caused by the sun.

#3: Use a clarifying shampoo.

Sure, camping is a blast! But coming home with smoke ridden hair is not so fun. This is just an example of ways summer activities can add buildup on our hair. If you clarify your hair with a color safe shampoo you can remove the unwanted pollutants like smoke, dust, minerals, and product buildup. All of these things can make your blonde look and feel dull. Please be careful, as not all clarifying shampoos are created equal. Ask your stylist for a gentile, color safe recommendation. My favorite is Solu by Davines.

#4: Deep condition your hair.

Just like our skin needs lotion after a day out in the sun, our hair needs the extra moisture too. For my blondes I love to recommend Olaplex no.8. This deep conditioner adds shine, smoothness and body, all while delivering the bond building protection I love from Olaplex.

#5: Use a proper detangling brush.

Hair that is dry from summer heat or chemicals in the water will tend to tangle easier. Using the right paddle brush to detangle will prevent unwanted breakage. I love my detangling brush by Framar, and Wet Brush.
